Sandi Wiggins' Acoustic
Neuroma Resources. This is a page of carefully researched information
about nearly every aspect of acoustic neuromas.
-
Acoustic Neuroma Association in Cumming,
GA. This is a group of approximately 5000 members, comprised of patients,
their relatives, doctors/surgeons, and others. They can supply you with
information in the form of brochures and booklets and can also put you
in touch with patients and chapters in your area. They may be reached by
phone @ 770 205-8211 (phone) and 770 205-0239 (fax), and by e-mail @ anausa@aol.com.
-
Referral to the above site will guide you to the AN-Support listserv where you can read problems
and solutions of others and post your own questions which usually bring
you responses. Be forewarned. Once you join this list
you may receive a lot of e-mail. There is much valuable information there and you will see many opinions expressed, sometimes quite strongly.
It is up to you to sort them out and to discuss them with your doctors.
There is no medical advice on the AN-Support list.
-
Central Virginia
Support Group. This site is no longer being updated but will remain on the internet for reference for some time. There you can read newsletters from all past meetings.
A new AN support group has been formed in the
Tidewater area. The contact person is Helene Gean at 757-625-4151.
-
Seattle AN Group Home Page
This carefully researched and well presented site from David Minger and
the Seattle Support Group contains a wealth of AN info readily available
plus links to many of the more authoritative other sites. Worth a look.
-
The House Ear Clinic and Ear Institute
in Los Angeles. House is known world-wide for its work with ANs (as well
as many other aspects of ear problems). I list it here because I know about
it as it is where I went for my surgery. Their home page directs you to
a lot of links dealing with ANs. The Institute is mostly concerned with
research whereas the Clinic deals with surgery and other treatments. The
Clinic can be reached by phone @ 213-483-9930. There are an increasing
number of other hospitals competent to deal with ANs. Many of their doctors
trained at House.
-
Acoustic Neuroma
at House. A personal narration of one patient's experience (mine) while
going through an AN removal at House. Just one person's observations.
-
Radiation Treatments (stereotactic radiosurgery, radiotherapy). Several
non-invasive methods of treatment are being used and should be evaluated
when making decisions.Stereotactic radiosurgery/therapy is used to reduce
or eliminate the tumor without use of surgery. I take no position in this
document as to pro or con; however, you should know that there are such
treatments available. One source of information is the Cleveland
Clinic which uses the Peacock Procedure among other methods. (If you
experience difficulty in getting to the right site, type in http://www.clevelandclinic.org/radonc/spec_prog/rad_surg.html).
This site contains very clear explanations of the various forms of
radiation treatment. An oversimplication is that one method of treatment
(Gamma Knife) uses an intensive one-shot procedure and Peacock (one form
of fractionated stereotactic radiation, or FSR for short) uses lesser intensity
spread over more applications.
-
This really good website Brian's
Acoustic Neuroma UK Pages will lead you to a lot of good links and
will give you some perspective on ANs in the United Kingdom. It will also
lead you to BANA, the British Acoustic Neuroma Association.
-
AN Archive..
This link has been added with some trepidation as it has an obvious bias
towards the various radiation treatments. The following statement is extracted
verbatim from the Archive's constitution:
"4. In particular, recognising that many excellent resources already
exist for surgical treatment of AN, to ensure that the non-surgical options
are highlighted on our web site."
Having said that I will say that it is a great compilation of AN data
of various kinds, assembled, created and maintained primarily by AN patients
who care. Their advisory board does not include doctors; most, but not
all, of the patients contributing to this site are radiation patients,
hence the bias. Give it a read; you'll be there for hours if you read it
all. Then think!
- This site from the International Radiosurgial Association (IRSA) provides
an explanation of Gamma Knife radiosurgery as an option for the treatment of Acoustic Neuromas up to 3 cm in
size. The site also provides links to centers of excellence for Gamma Knife surgery in the U.S. and around the
world, as well as both patient and professional forums (bulletin boards) for discussion of accoustic neuroma
topics.

-
This document only scratches the surface as to what info is available.
You will probably suffer from information overload if you try to read all
of the links available; however, if reviewed rationally they may help you
to make a decision.
PLEASE, PEOPLE, DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH! CONSIDER THIS LIST ONLY
AS YOU WOULD THE YELLOW PAGES!

-
Following is a list of doctors and hospitals and others that I know work with ANs (more properly termed "vestibular schwannomas").
In some cases this information is based on a single report from
a "satisfied customer" but some documentation exists for each. E-mails
are solicited from patients citing additional hospitals and doctors, as
well as comments about those presently on the list. Please indicate if
you are willing to receive e-mail from other patients. I shall add
phone numbers, websites, and e-mail addresses (for professionals only) as they become
available. In many cases I have fax, address, and other information available
in addition to that presented here.
(Please note that in many cases the doctors mentioned are
not on the staffs of the associated hospitals but have privileges there).

And, In Conclusion...
There are many, many others; however, as I said earlier, consider the number
of procedures made by any one hospital or doctor when making your decision
as to where to go. As regards traveling away from home remember that an
airplane ticket is a very small cost overall. Airplane travel shortly after
surgery has not presented any problems. Hopefully your local doctors will
help you with this decision.
